Basic body measurements you need to know

Welcome back my amazing people, today you will be learning about some basic body measurements and their meanings. So let's get started.

Shoulder
When it comes to taking measurements, the shoulder comes first. This measurement allows your clothes to sit on your shoulder. It makes your clothes lay perfectly on your shoulder. It also determines where your arm hole will be cut. Remember, shoulder measurement is very important and it is needed in all type of clothes be it a gown or a top. To take this shoulder measurement, place your tape rule one end of the shoulder to another. In this case, I shorten the name of this measurement to SH, how about you?

Length
This measurement is as important as the shoulder measurement. You cannot cut not to talk of sewing a clothe without the body measurements. Length is needed when cutting a top, gown, trouser, skirt and any other clothe you can think of. The funny thing is you cannot assume a length of a clothe without measuring the person, so always remember to measure your client's length to avoid bouncing from frying pan to fire, I know what I am saying. Different clothes have their measurements e.g half length, top length, trouser length, gown length e.t.c When taking this measurement I abbreviate it to L, what about you?

Bust
This measurement is mostly needed when sewing a female clothe. It is mostly needed when sewing a top or a gown. This measurement determines how to shape out the chest part of the clothe. To measure, place your tape rule around the bust area, do not make it tight and do not make it loose, let the tape sit perfectly when measuring. I use B when taking the bust measurements. If you are sewing padded clothe , then you need to take the bust point BP and the under bust  UB measurements. The bust point is the measurement taken from the shoulder to the your nipple point and under bust is the measurement taken from the shoulder to underneath your breast.
Waist
This measurement gives the fitting of the clothe. The waist helps achieve the curvy shape in a gown. The waist is an important part of the measurement because everyone has different waist length and without the waist measurement the shape of the hip cannot be achieved. To measure the waist, place the measurement at the inner part of the waist. Abbreviated as W.

Hips
This is meant to bring out the curves in ladies. The hip measurement also helps in the fitting of a clothe. The hip measurement is usually the widest part of the body meaning it has the biggest measurement except if the client is busty. The hip measurement is achieved by placing the tap on the hip/buttocks. It is abrievated to H in the measurement book.

Sleeve/ Round sleeve
Sleeve measurement indicates the length of your clothe hand and round sleeve indicates the fitting of the clothe hand. To measure the sleeve place the tape on the shoulder and measure to desired length and to measure the round sleeve, place the tape around the part where your sleeve length stops. Sleeve abrievated as Sl and round sleeve as RS.
